Square Enix has also trademarked other older game franchises recently. Collection of Mana , for example, was recently trademarked in Japan and may indicate that western audiences could finally see a release of the third Seiken Densetsu RPG, which has never been officially localized in English.
Parasite Eve was considered groundbreaking for its time, headed by the team that brought Final Fantasy 7 to life. It revolved around the so-called New York Blockade Incident that saw a superhuman entity named Eve wreak havoc by causing anyone within range to spontaneously combust, with the exception of protagonist Aya Brea.
Couple that with a storyline that I won't even start to explain, and what you end up with is a great gaming experience. This game has some of the best CG scenes around. The mutating monsters look absolutely incredible, and some of the clips are hard to tell if they are actually video. The in-game graphics are not quite as good, but they definitely get the job done. Everything is real-time 3D and the game suffers from no noticeable slowdown.
To nitpick a little, it was a bit annoying when the characters would reach down to pick up the phone and act like they were lifting the receiver up to their ear, but the receiver just stayed on the hook. I guess it took away from the overall realistic feel of the game, but like I said, this is really nitpicky.
It looks like I have a new favorite game for the time being. I really enjoyed this one. It was nice to play a RPG-type game that was set in a real-world environment instead of some faraway mystical land.
This review does not even scratch the surface of everything that makes up this game. I don't want to ruin any of the storyline for you, so be prepared for plenty of plot twists and turns and lots of characters being introduced.
There was a little too much text at times and it slowed the game a little, but not enough to really turn me off. I guess it is a good thing that the review is coming to a close because thanks to Parasite Eve , I have a stack of games on my desk that I have not even opened.
If you've been keeping up with our coverage of Parasite Eve--Square's next big thing--for the past few months, you already know it's the collaborative effort of Final Fantasy VH's main development staff and a group of Flollywood digital-effects gurus.
And you already know you're probably going to buy the dang thing when it ships in September. So what's left to tell? After playing through a beta English version of the first disc in this two-disc adventure, we've found PE to be Square's least conventional RPG to date well, at least if you ignore some of the stranger preBit titles Square released only in Japan.
Let's tick off the similarities, shall we. And, sure enough, Aya traipses through where-have-l-seen-that-before settings such as a besieged police station and morgue, deserted city streets and sewers. There are even a few points in PE where monsters burst suddenly from behind two-way mirrors and other hidden areas, thus creating some of the crap-your-pants suspense of the RE games.
Aya also wields, among other things, a rocket launcher that can dispense acid and incendiary rockets. Cripes, even the games' names--Parasite Eve and Resident Evil--sound similar.
Beyond just earning experience points and gaining levels from successful battles, Aya also earns bonus points. These you can allocate to quicken the pace of Aya's battle timer or increase the number of items she can carry in her inventory.
You can even spend the points on Aya's various weapons and armor, making them more effective. Speaking of weapons, Aya will come across a varied arsenal of bang-bang gear, including handguns, shotguns, rifles and machine guns as well as clubs and other melee weapons. Each weapon has its own range and shots-per-turn characteristics. But here's the cool part: A special tool item lets you strip parts off one gun and add it to another, giving you the ability to modify and supercharge your favorite firearm at the expense of trashing other guns.
The same tool also lets you modify armor, too. Our run through the first disc revealed numerous plot twists regarding the relationship between Aya and Eve, PE's mitochondria-mutating superviltain. But we're not about to spoil your fun by revealing them here. You'll just have to wait until the game's September release to see just how exciting--and weird--Manhattan can get on a Christmas Eve.
When you encounter a party of monsters which usually happens only once per area, instead of randomly , Aya's attack timer immediately begins priming. You can move her wherever you wish in the combat area, dodging the attacks of the baddies, who can also roam freely. Now she can attack any enemies in range the limits of which are shown by a green geodesic hemisphere , target multiple baddies most guns shoot more than one bullet or summon Parasite Energy spells.
It packs the same spectacular effects, found mainly in the frequent CG cinemas. And the game spins a gory tale that, for the most part, keeps you interested until the finale. But like most overblown summer movies, PE has its faults. Several confusing plot twists had me asking, "What the heck just happened? You just plow through each "dungeon," collect a few items, beat the Boss, then move on.
Thankfully, battles are infrequent, and the innovative combat system saves you from button-mashing boredom. Aya doesn't learn a particularly large number of spells, although you can allocate experience points to improve abilities. Thanks to her, the National Guard was able to enter Club Sacrifice with less casualties and successfully repel the Twisted while defeating an advanced Twisted known as Helix. However, at the same time, Aya begins to regain pieces of her memory.
While rescuing civilians she managed to find a survivor known as Emily Jefferson. Through this acquaintance, Aya managed to remember that there was another girl who really resembles her. Shortly thereafter, though, Emily grew into a special Twisted herself, and she was gunned down by Aya and the National Guard. Aya Brea's core ability in T3B; it is the vector by which she travels into the past in order to eliminate the Twisted.
The term "Overdive" is a portmanteau of sorts; Aya is layering her consciousness "Over" that of a National Guardsman or other pertinent human in the past, while her physical form rests in the present at CTI headquarters - her vitals dropping to levels resembling a deep-sea "Dive. Using Overdive, Aya can maintain total battlefield control remotely by possessing otherwise NPC-operated soldiers in sequence.
Nevertheless, Aya is still putting her life on the line - if a human she's Overdived into dies before she is able to escape, her consciousness will be lost with them, leaving only an inert body in CTI's present. Overdive also has an offensive capability, in the form of Overdive Kill. The theory behind this ability stems from Overdive being incapable of transplanting Aya's consciousness into less developed creatures such as animals, resulting in violent psychosomatic shock to the Overdive target.
After successfully saturating a Twisted with gunfire or hitting its weak point, Aya can make an instantaneous Overdive into the creature, causing massive damage or outright dissolving the target.
Despite the explicit riskiness of the maneuver, Overdive Kill is the preferred method of eliminating Twisted - the cellular shock leaves no corpse on a killing blow, which would otherwise remain to deal caustic damage to bystanders even after death. Aya's life and death affects the NPC she's possessed. When the controlled NPC is on the verge of dying the game slows down allowing the player to perform an Overdive and switch to another soldier if available. With most of Aya's own customizable weapons having a limited amount of ammo, the player will have to make strategic use of the varied weaponry carried by the different soldiers.
When selecting a target to dive in, its weapon and current ammo count will be displayed. Aya must fill three weapon slots, though the first slot is always filled by her default pistol with infinite upgradeable ammo. The fourth slot is filled by the NPC whose body you inhabit. Weapons may be upgraded with BP, obtained from defeating enemies. Most can be customized in order to maximize either damage or Overdive Kill buildup.
Ammo capacity roughly as limited as Shotguns'. Abysmal ammo capacity. Excepting the Blaze Edge pistol, they value dealing fast damage above all else and cannot take advantage of lock-on.
Special Weapons cannot be upgraded. Aya has access to multiple guns for use in combat, including handguns, assault rifles and shotguns. By holding down a button on the controller, Aya automatically aims at an enemy and can fire at will. Taking cover behind objects or shields, or standing idle outside of battle, allows Aya to regenerate health.
